A lash lift reshapes the lashes you already have. Extensions add lashes you do not. That distinction decides everything else: how dramatic the result is, how long it lasts, how much of your year it takes and how easily you can undo it. Choose wrongly and you pay for a subscription you did not want, or a result nobody notices.

A lift reshapes what is already there
Nothing is attached to your face during a lift, and nothing is removed.
Your lashes are combed up against a small shield, softened with one solution so they can be reshaped, then set in the new curl with a second. It takes about an hour. Most people add a tint, which darkens the fine pale hairs at the edges.
The result is your own lashes standing up instead of pointing down or straight out. If your lashes are reasonably long but sit flat, the difference is startling, because length that was invisible is now visible. If they are short or sparse, a lift has less to work with. It cannot create hair.
It holds for six to eight weeks, fading as lifted lashes shed and unlifted ones grow through.
Extensions add length you do not have
Extensions are individual fibers bonded one at a time to your own lashes. They add length, thickness and darkness, and can be shaped across the eye for a particular effect.
A full set takes ninety minutes to two and a half hours. Each extension leaves when the lash it is attached to sheds, so the set thins steadily and needs topping up every two to three weeks.
The result is far more dramatic and more customisable, and it is the start of a routine rather than a single appointment.
Ten seconds in front of a mirror settles it
Stand in front of a mirror and push your lashes upward with a clean brush or a fingertip, holding them there while you count to ten.
If that alone looks like enough, you want a lift, because it is roughly what the treatment delivers. If you look at it and still wish there were simply more lashes, no amount of curling gets you there, and you want extensions.
It takes ten seconds and it settles the question more reliably than any photograph.
The real cost is the calendar, not the price list
People are caught out here, because the number on the menu is not the price of the decision.
A lift is self contained. You pay once, wear it for two months, and there is no upkeep beyond keeping it dry for a day and brushing the lashes. Six to eight appointments a year.
Extensions are ongoing. Infills every two to three weeks means around twenty appointments a year, each up to an hour. Over twelve months the cost gap is substantial and the time gap larger still. We would rather you knew that before the first set than worked it out in March.
The daily routine differs too. With a lift you can wear mascara, swim, use any cleanser and rub your eyes when you are tired. With extensions you give up mascara, avoid oil based products, wash your face with care and clean the lash line daily. If you swim regularly, work out most days, or travel constantly and cannot keep a standing appointment, a lift usually suits the life you actually have.
The lower maintenance option is the harder one to undo
Extensions are easier to reverse than a lift, which surprises people.
If you dislike a set, it can be professionally removed in fifteen to thirty minutes, and you have your own lashes back that afternoon.
A lift cannot be reversed. The lashes have been reshaped, and the only way out is to wait for them to grow through and shed, which takes the full six to eight weeks. It is rarely a disaster, since a lift that looks too dramatic softens within a fortnight. But it is worth knowing which way round that runs before you choose.
One distinction matters here. A curl higher than you wanted is a question of taste, and it will settle. Lashes that feel dry, brittle or snapping after a lift are not. They mean the treatment was over processed, and they are worth raising with your technician.
You cannot have both at once
Extensions bond poorly to lifted lashes, and the two curls fight each other, so the set sits awkwardly and does not last.
Plenty of people alternate instead: extensions for a season or an event, then a lift through quieter months. Let a lift grow out fully before booking extensions, and have extensions removed well before a lift.
Before you book
Push your lashes up in the mirror tonight and look properly.
If that is the look you wanted, book the lift and save yourself the standing appointment. If it is not, book the extensions knowing you are taking on a fortnightly habit. The people who regret them are almost always the ones who thought it was a one off.
