Come with clean, bare, dry lashes, no eye makeup, and no oils on your face for a day or two beforehand. Eat something, use the bathroom and take your contact lenses out at home. A single idea explains all of it, and once you have that idea the rest of the list stops feeling arbitrary.

The glue does not dry, it sets
Ordinary glue works by drying out. Lash adhesive does the opposite. It stays liquid in the bottle and hardens the moment it meets moisture, which it finds in the air of the room and on the lash itself. That happens in seconds.
It is also why a good studio is particular about its environment. Air that is too dry leaves the adhesive soft for too long and the extension slides. Air that is too damp grips before the technician has finished placing it.
The part that concerns you is whatever sits between the glue and your lash. A film of mascara. A trace of liner in the lash line. Face oil that crept up from your cheekbones overnight. Any of it and the adhesive bonds to residue instead of hair, and residue falls off.
Ten seconds with a tissue will tell you where you stand
Fold a clean, dry tissue, press it against your closed lashes while you count to ten, and look at it.
Any gray smudge, beige mark or damp patch of oil is what the adhesive would have bonded to. That is your answer. Wash again and repeat until the tissue comes away clean.
Oil is the part people miss
Everyone knows to avoid oil afterwards. Fewer people know it matters beforehand, because oil does not rinse away as easily as makeup.
Give rich eye creams, cleansing balms and facial oils a rest for a day or two. Then think about the things you would not connect to your eyes at all: a heavy night cream, a hair oil that transfers onto your pillowcase. These leave a film that lingers, and it is usually the invisible ones that catch people out.
If you use a lash growth serum, say so at the consultation. Some change the texture of the hair and the rate at which it sheds, and your technician would rather work around that than discover it midway.
It is two hours of lying still, and people underestimate that
A full set takes between ninety minutes and two and a half hours, all of it flat on your back with your eyes closed.
Treat it like a long flight. Use the bathroom first. Go easy on coffee, which makes lying motionless harder and a two hour stretch without a break much harder. Take your lenses out at home rather than in the treatment room. Eat beforehand, since low blood sugar in a warm, dim room is how people end up feeling faint. Skip the polo neck.
If you fall asleep, so much the better. A sleeping client does not flutter her eyelids.
Healthy lids matter more than clean ones
The lash line is a warm strip of skin that collects debris like anywhere else on your face. The difference is that people with extensions often stop cleaning it. They have paid for something delicate and are afraid of ruining it, so they wash around their eyes rather than over them. Weeks of that and the base of the lashes congests while the lid margin turns red and itchy.
Build the cleansing habit before your first appointment rather than after, so it is already automatic by the time you have something to protect.
Two things are worth separating. Lashes that look sparse or uneven are a question of appearance and a conversation with your technician. Lids that are currently sore, flaky, swollen, or carrying a stye are not. Move the booking. A set applied over an irritated lid margin will not hold anyway, and we would rather rebook you than take your money twice.
Book the patch test, and accept that it costs you a trip
A patch test at least twenty-four to forty-eight hours ahead is a separate journey for a two minute job. There is no way to make that convenient.
Reactions to adhesive are uncommon, but they are real, and the test means you find out on the back of your hand rather than on your eyelid.
Bring a photograph, then be honest about it
Photographs are most useful when the eyes in them are shaped like yours.
Length that suits one eye can feel heavy on another, and extensions much longer than your own lashes are more likely to feel noticeable through the day. Working close to your own proportions tends to be the more comfortable choice as well as the more flattering one.
Before you leave the house
Clean, bare, dry lashes. No eye makeup. No oils for two days. No lenses, no coffee, no full bladder. Healthy lids and a patch test on file.
Do the tissue test on the morning of your appointment, and if it comes away marked, wash again before you go.
