The name doesn’t help. Lash lifts were long known as “lash perms,” and the word “perm” suggests something that stays for good. So, is a lash lift permanent? No, although the full answer is more interesting than a simple yes or no. The curl on each treated lash is long-lasting, but your lash line as a whole returns to its natural shape within roughly two months as new lashes grow in.

Permanent for each lash, temporary for the lash line
A lash lift changes the structure of the lash itself. A lifting solution softens the internal bonds that hold each hair’s shape, the lashes are set over a shield, and a second solution fixes them in their new position. Once that’s done, the curl doesn’t wash out, sweat out, or drop overnight.
In that sense, the change is permanent for every lash that was treated. But no lash lives forever. Each one eventually sheds and is replaced by a new lash that has never been lifted, so the treatment doesn’t so much wear off as get replaced, one lash at a time.
The only window in which the curl is genuinely fragile is the first day or two after treatment, while it finishes setting. That’s why aftercare advice focuses so heavily on keeping lashes dry at the start. After that, the shape is as fixed as it will ever be.
Why you can’t undo a lash lift quickly
Because the curl is built into the lash, no product reverses it on the spot. If a lift comes out curlier or more lifted than you wanted, the honest answer is that time is the fix. A lash conditioner can keep the hairs soft, and brushing them into place each morning helps them settle, but re-processing the lashes to straighten them soon afterwards risks real damage.
This is why we think the consultation is the most important part of the appointment. Agreeing on the shield size and how much lift you want before anything touches your lashes matters far more than any attempt at correction afterwards. It’s also the right moment to mention sensitive eyes or previous reactions, so the treatment can be adjusted or a patch test arranged first.
Will a lash lift change your natural lashes long-term?
No. The solutions work along the length of the lash, not on the follicle beneath the skin, so the lashes that grow in after your treatment are exactly as they were before: the same length, the same thickness, and the same natural direction. A lift doesn’t train your lashes to curl, and it doesn’t make them grow differently. It doesn’t limit your future choices either: once a lift has grown out, you can switch to extensions or go back to a curler.
Damage, when it happens, is also limited to the treated lashes. Overprocessed lashes can turn dry, brittle, or frizzy, but they’re replaced as part of the normal growth cycle. The bigger risk comes from lifting too often, before weakened lashes have had a chance to grow out. Spacing treatments sensibly keeps each lift working on healthy hair.
Is there a way to curl lashes permanently?
Not at present. Because every lash sheds and is replaced, any curl applied to it will eventually leave with it. Prescription lash-growth treatments can lengthen lashes, but they don’t change the direction they grow in. The realistic choice is between a daily lash curler, a lift every couple of months, or extensions, which add curl through the extensions themselves. Lifts are often booked together with a lash tint, and the same rule applies to both: neither is permanent, and the tint usually fades before the curl does.
We’re biased, of course, but for people with naturally straight lashes, we think a lift is the closest thing to a permanent solution. One appointment replaces weeks of daily curling, without any glue or added lashes.
Why semi-permanent works in your favor
A lash lift that faded overnight would be frustrating, and one that lasted forever would leave no room to change your mind. Its lifespan sits in a sensible middle ground. You get weeks of lifted lashes with almost no daily effort, and if you ever want something different, your natural lashes are never more than a few weeks away. To us, that’s exactly what a good beauty treatment should offer.
